Widnes ended their five-season sojourn in the Hallmark Security League by signing off with a 2-1 win over Burscough in the Macron Challenge Cup final at Fleetwood Town’s Highbury Stadium.

The record books will show that a goal from Sam Sheen 13 minutes from time clinched victory for the Premier Division runners-up, but that only tells part of the story.

In a game that was a terrific advert for the league, both sides delivered an engrossing and entertaining 90 minutes of football played at a brisk pace throughout, with Burscough going toe to toe with opponents that finished 46 points above them in the league table.

And while Sheen was the man whose goal sealed victory for Widnes, at the other end they also had goalkeeper Richie Mottram to thank for some fine saves late on, that preserved his side’s lead and underlined why he won the Premier Division goalkeeper of the month award on more than one occasion this season.

It was a fine end to a memorable season for Widnes, who now head off to the new pastures of the Evo-Stik League with the Macron Challenge Cup in their possession.

Evo-Stik League South East side Hartley Wintney finished a marvellous first season at Step 3 level by winning the Aldershot Senior Cup.

Hartley Wintney won promotion by beating Cambridge City in the play-off final on May 7th and added another trophy to the cabinet by beating Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League side Eversley & California at the EBB Stadium.

Eversley took the lead against the run of play through Lewis Robson.

Paul Hodges equalised and then Dean Stow gave the higher level side the lead just before the break.

The Row added further goals from Nic Ciardini and Hodges again to make the final scoreline 4-1.

Walsall Wood won the Total Motion Midland League Polymac Packaging League Cup against Coleshill Town at Walsall`s Banks`s Stadium.

Joey Butlin and a Paul Sullivan penalty outgunned Coleshill`s Joe Smith to lift the trophy.

Goals from Ryan Quinn and Nathan Haines saw Midland League Division One side Atherstone Town cause an upset in the semi-final of the JW Hunt Cup by beating Evo-Stik League South promotees Alvechurch at the CKW Stadium.

Ryan Smith and Tom Black scored the goals that earned Radford victory against Holwell Sports in the East Midlands Counties League Cup semi-final at Clifton All Whites.

The final will be held on Bank holiday Monday (28th May) at Eastwood CFC.
