Macclesfield Town manager John Askey confirmed that Alex Bruce, Wes Brown and Shay Given have been training with the Vanarama National League club.

Speaking at the ‘Kit Launch and Fans Forum’ evening, Askey praised the trio for the professional nature and their positive impact on the Macclesfield squad.

Former Manchester United defender and Champions League winner Brown is currently a free agent after leaving Blackburn Rovers, whilst Given and Bruce are without a club after leaving Stoke City and Hull City respectively.

Speaking about the trio, Askey told the club`s official website: “They have been training with us and they are great to have around.

“It says a lot about the Football Club that they came in to training one day, and then came in the next and the next.

“That shows that they are enjoying what we do and that we are doing it the right way.”

Silkmen assistant-manager Steve Watson also praised the trio by saying: “It’s great for the lads to have them here. Wes and Alex are doing their coaching badges so helped to run a session yesterday whilst Shay has been taking the goalkeepers.”

Askey joked: “Our best defence in training at the minute is Shay Given, Alex Bruce, Wes Brown and Steve Watson, we just need a left-back now!”
