Bostik League South club Ashford United have announced the appointment of Gary Alexander as Jason Whitmore’s number two at the Homelands.

Ironically, Alexander replaces Paul Barnes, who left the Nuts & Bolts to fill his managerial role at league rivals Greenwich Borough.

Alexander was appointed as Greenwich boss in December 2015, and helped win promotion from the Southern Counties East League in 2015/16 before qualifying for the Bostik South play-offs the following season, ultimately being defeated by Corinthian-Casuals in the semi-final stage.

As a player, the 38-year-old made over 400 League appearances for the likes of Swindon, Exeter, Hull, Leyton Orient, Millwall, Brentford, Crawley and Burton Albion.

Alexander brings tremendous experience and football knowledge to Ashford.

Alexander will officially join the management team on Monday.
