Evo-Stik League North South title favourites South Shields showed they will be a force to reckoned with at the higher level next season after demolishing Premier side Workington AFC 5-1 at Borough Park to reach the semi-finals of the Integro League Cup on Thursday night.
Shields have been in goalscoring form of late and made it 14 goals in three games.
And the Mariners achieved their result, despite fielding a youthful sid, including five of the club’s academy lads in the starting line-up.
Goals from Lee Mason after 16 minutes which was cancelled out by loanee Max Brown after 24 minutes, and then Barrie Smith from the penalty spot after 56 minutes, Luke Sullivan 2 minutes later, Graeme Armstrong on 77 minutes and Dan Lowther 3 minutes after that secured a comfortable passage for Shields.
The other quarter-final on Thursday saw Evo-Stik North rivals Atherton Collieries and Ramsbottom United to battle at Alder Street.
Adam Farrell gave Colls a 13th minute lead.
But it wasn`t until the 87th minute that the hosts could celebrate what has been a good season at the highest level they`ve played at when Ben Hardcastle, who celebrated his 200th game for the club in the win at Kendal Town 48 hours earlier, doubled their lead.
Atherton Collieries join Coalville Town, Hednesford Town and South Shields in today`s semi-final draw.
