In the Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Premier Division on Saturday, Andover Town collected three more points with victory over a Newport (IoW) side that battled for 90 minutes and had their share of possession, but they lacked the firepower up front to trouble the home defence and two goals in the opening 20 minutes proved decisive.

With Blackfield & Langley and Sholing not in action, Hamworthy United retained their third place but not without a struggle at the County Ground.

Visitors Team Solent were four one up at one stage – two goals from Silvano Obeng before, led by a Steve Smith hat-trick, the Hammers stormed back to win 5-4.

AFC Portchester’s five-match winning run ended at Alresford Town where a last-minute goal for the home side meant the points were shared, and there was a similar outcome at Lymington Town when again a very late goal for the home side ensured a two all draw with Portland United. The latter have now recorded twelve draws in the league so far this season.

There was yet another 2-2 draw at Bournemouth FC in the relatively local derby with Bashley, while Brockenhurst’s fortunes failed to improve as two goals from Jordan Matthews helped Bemerton Heath Harlequins to a 3-0 victory at Western Way.

Just three games in Division One, but enough to see the number one spot change hands again.

Laverstock & Ford made it five wins in a row with Danny Finnegan scoring twice in an impressive 5-0 win at New Milton and now lead the table.

With Follands having already been mentioned the only other game saw AFC Stoneham also score five, at Alton Town’s expense, with Will Harris claiming two and making it four straight wins and fifth place in the table, where just six points cover the top six sides.
