A Change in Fortunes
Rod Stringer (back) and Colin Reid

....there has been an upturn in fortunes both off and on the pitch at Blue Square Bet North club Bishop’s Stortford .

When the management team came in the club were in the drop zone in twentieth position, currently they sit in twelfth.

This is no mean achievement given that the management team hadn’t had the luxury of seeing many of the teams they were set to play and had a large number of games against the promotion chasing clubs. Shrewd tactics, often tweaked at half time after studying the opposition’s shape resulted in some great results.

In a twelve-day period the club had 4 long haul away games and picked up a creditable seven points out of twelve.

There were also some shrewd signings with the likes of Reneil Sappleton, previously of Macclesfield Town looking to regain fitness after an injury and who has become a firm favourite amongst the fans in a very short space of time, and Matt Johnson, who was with Stringer at Braintree Town.

The fight for survival in the Conference North this season has been a tough proposition with clubs as high as thirteenth still being in the mix for relegation with three games to go.

Last Saturday’s home victory against Vauxhall Motors mathematically brought safety to Bishop’s Stortford, allowing them to concentrate on two important cup finals.

In the space of a week, starting tonight, Stortford play Molten Spartan South Midlands League sides Oxhey Jets and Leverstock Green in the Herts Senior and Charity Cups respectively.

This only goes to prove that it is possible to beat almost anyone with the right type of coaching/management. Greater still to move from 20th to 12th is an extraordinary achievement and many fans must be thankful with their new management team. A good team to watch especially as they endeavour to play football.
