Although born in Sierra Leone, the 20-year-old left-back is also qualified to play for England and has represented the Three Lions at both under-16 and under-17 levels.

After starting his career in the Arsenal youth set-up, Barnett moved to Goodison Park in 2007 and had a loan spell at Darlington in 2009, making four Football League appearances, making his debut in a 2–0 away defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge.
