Forward Whitehead, who was released by Swindon Town in the summer, had been training with Blue Square Bet North new boys Oxford City.

Abingdon boss Richie Bourne said: “Oxford City manager Mike Ford contacted me to say he was available. It was really a case then of me persuading him to come and have a look as I knew a couple of other clubs were interested. Once he played Saturday though I think the lad realised he'll get a chance here maybe more than some of the other clubs that have the bigger budgets and squads.

“He's at an important stage of his career where he needs to be playing to continue his development so hopefully we can provide that for him. I know Ben`s looking forward it, and I'm delighted he's signed.”
