Barnes started his career at Villa Park in 1997 and then left for closest rivals Birmingham in 2000 and signed a four-year professional contract.
However, a serious injury ended his League career .
He also had trials at West Ham, Southampton and Leicester City and spells at Hereford United and Tamworth before starting a coaching role at St Andrews.
“Neil will be a great asset to the club,” said Grainger. “He is a great bloke with a good knowledge of the game.”
