Appleby Calls for Common Sense
Steve Appleby

....Wisbech Town last weekend - but admitted more “common sense” decisions needs to be made in non-League football.

Appleby, who led the Fenmen to their first trophy in sixteen years last season, said he will consider his future again in the summer after growing disillusioned with a number of incidents this campaign.

The passionate manager bemoaned a string of refeering decisions and fixture rescheduling issues as major reasons behind his annoyance.

Appleby said: “I speak the truth and I will never change - I say it how is it.

“I just want the right things to be happening. If we lose to a better side I’d hold my hands up but this season has been frustrating. Things have added up which have annoyed me.

“Refs haven’t been making common sense decisions and now our postponed away game at Felixstowe & Walton United has been rescheduled as a midweek game – surely it could have been moved to a weekend?

“Some lads will have to take the day off work. The whole system of football at this level needs to be looked at because every penny is vital for every club, including Wisbech Town.”

The Fenmen, who have applied for promotion from the Ridgeons Premier Division with Wroxham, were the league’s last remaining representatives in the FA Vase.

Appleby’s side, ninth in the league, haven’t played since their 3-1 Fourth Round replay defeat to Dunston UTS. Their league games against Felixstowe and Saturday’s clash with Diss Town fell foul of the weather.

Appleby said: “Last season we were delighted to finish fourth and win the Ridgeons League Challenge Cup.

“It’s nice that some people think I’m doing a decent job but it’s only because of people helping me like Paul Brenchley (ex-chairman), Chris Dear (ex-assistant) and now Barry Carter (chairman), David ‘Snips’ Parsons (vice chairman) and Darren Jimson (assistant) that it’s happened.

“Although our FA Vase run has ended and a lot of people think there’s not a lot to play for I disagree. We aimed to improve on our fourth-placed finish, to try and get promotion, and that’s still my aim. Nothing has changed.”
