The 36-year-old, who started the season as joint player-manager of league rivals Eastwood Town, is capable of playing in midfield as well as at left-back and centre half.
Armstrong quit his role at Coronation Park earlier in the month and is now set to resume his playing career with the Pilgrims.
The former Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town man has already trained with the Pilgrims' squad and watched the back-to-back home wins against Hinckley United and Droylsden from the stands.
