Bashir Holds Showdown Talks
Nasir Bashir

.....the Blue Square Bet Premier last weekend.

The United boss met with chairman Derek Goodall and other members of the club’s hierarchy to discuss both United’s and his own future at the club.

United were sent crashing back down to the Conference South last Saturday, despite upsetting the odds against Lincoln City as Newport County picked up three points against Alfreton Town.

And the club is moving swiftly to lay the foundations for next season by holding the meeting with the United boss in order to formulate a plan for their return to non-League’s second tier.

Speaking prior to the meeting, the United boss said: “We’ll look at the future of the club because with the new ground coming it’s important that the structure is put in place for the future, not just next season.

“At this time it’s more important to get the players signed and not have the same situation we were in last season. I have spoken to a number of players about next season already and told them that I want them to stay.

“For myself, I’ve enjoyed this year and it’s been a challenge. I want to coach and manage at the highest level, which I think everybody does, and we’ll see where it goes after the meeting on Thursday. Hopefully we can put some things in place and take the club forward.”

United’s demotion on Saturday brought the club’s long relegation battle to an end and Bashir admits the writing was on the wall a few weeks before their fate was confirmed.

He added: “The Telford game at home and the Lincoln game at home were probably the two games we needed to win. I’m obviously disappointed and it didn’t work out how I wanted it to work out but all of the players and the staff have shown a lot of honesty this year.

Stockport will visit Kingfield tomorrow for as United bring down the curtain on their Blue Square Premier season.

Goodall has advised, that with the exception of under-16's, a flat rate admission of just £5 will be charged for entry to the game, while under-16 admission will be set at £1.

Bashir added: “We want to try and finish as best as we can this season so we will go into Saturday’s game with Stockport trying to win. Ideally, I wanted to finish fifth from bottom – that was my target at the start of the season – but we have finished fourth from bottom.”
