Bastock Set To Break World Record

A world record should be beaten on Saturday – and it would be in the relatively tranquil world of the Buildbase FA Vase.

ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division club Wisbech Town travel across the Fens to take on Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side Thetford Town in a Second Round tie.

And the Brecklanders could be surprised by the amount of interest from the national media at Mundford Road.

That`s because between the posts for the visiting Fenmen – fitness allowed – will be ageless 47-year-old Paul Bastock, who signed for Wisbech earlier this season after leaving Evo-Stik League South outfit Corby Town.

Bastock has enjoyed a long and successful career in both League and non-League football, most notably with Boston United in several spells.

He currently totals 1,248 appearances and is expected to equal England legend Peter Shilton’s record of 1,249 appearances in a league game at Sleaford Town on Wednesday night.

Bastock should then make his 1,250th competitive career club appearance in Saturday’s Vase tie at Thetford.

It`s a remarkable achievement from someone who just loves playing still after a career that began back in 1986 at Coventry City!
