....Town and it was looking like Dwight Gayle wasn't even going to equal the club record of forty league and cup goals scored in a season set by Tommy English.
A fine cross in to the box and a charging Gayle set for a certain goal but he was literally millimeters out as the fans looked at each other, their faces said it all, "he's not going to do it is he". But then it came, this time he got on the end of the cross, slotted the ball under Sam Andrew and the forty goal record was equalled.
His second goal of the game and forty-first of the campaign came as Reece Prestedge put the ball through down the centre right in front of Gayle who floated the ball over the charging Andrew. Minutes later he had his hat-trick after Matt Johnson was fouled in the box.
Gayle slotted home the penalty, got his forty-second goal and set a record which could well take another twenty-three years to be broken.
Gayle, on loan from npower League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge, will surely go on to great things but Stortford fans will be hoping that the Daggers manager John Still – a former Blues manager himself - will maybe think that an extra season with the Conference North side will do him the world of good. Stortford fans certainly have their fingers crossed.
Gayle said after the game and said he was proud to have broken the record and thanked the fans for their support throughout the season.
His dad Devon, who played for Stortford in the 1980s and 90s, will no doubt be very proud of his son's achievement.
