The victory at the neutral Parkgate venue brought a happy end to manager Vince Brockie’s first season in charge.
The Dennyboys, being a Premier Division club, were favourites going into the final against their Division One opponents but had to be up to the task as Shirebrook had their spells in the game.
An early goal settled Brockie’s men – and it was route one as it stemmed from a Town attack. They were caught offside and Thackley keeper Mark Bower launched the ball forward from the resulting free-kick. Liam Moore headed it on and Dempsey Smith got behind the Shirebrook defence to tuck home a shot.
Moore saw a later header, from a Chris Davey corner, cleared off the line and Shirebrook took heart from that close shave and equalised just after the half-hour mark.
Bower dived to make a good save but could only parry and Liam Pride slotted in the loose ball from 12 yards.
The Dennyboys still went into the break a goal to the good, which is what their first-half display had merited, as Matty Hall’s speculative cross-shot from the left flank in the 38th minute sailed over the Town keeper.
Thackley created several more chances after the interval, with Callum White, Smith and substitute Brice Tiani all going close. But they had to wait until the last minute to put the gloss on their win.
Tiani was the provider as he cut in from the left and played a square pass to Smith, who fired a shot in off the post.
Dennyboys spokesman Mick Lodge said: “It is a small pitch at Parkgate but a marvellous surface and it was quite a good game.
“I think we created more, so probably deserved it, but the bottom line is that won a cup and everyone is delighted.
“We are not a club for making a lot of noise but we will enjoy this in our own way and it was nice that Nicky Matthews and Ross Daly came along to join us after their triumph the day before.”
Daly and Matthews both left Thackley to join Bradford Park Avenue and were involved as their new club reached the Blue Square Bet North via their Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division play-off final victory over FC United of Manchester on Sunday.
