The former Gillingham, Brighton, Fulham and Cardiff midfielder was a surprise inclusion in Ryman League Division One South club Faversham Town’s FA Cup tie against Margate last Saturday but was forced off after 75 minutes with a heel injury which is set to keep him on the sidelines.
Carpenter, who turns 40 at the end of the month, has been training with the Lilywhites and boss Ray Turner said: "He lives locally and wanted to help us out.
"I have kept in touch with him for the last couple of years.
"It’s great for the club because we want to do everything that raises our profile."
Having bowed out of the FA Cup in midweek, Turner turns his attention to the FA Trophy and a Preliminary Round tie at home to Ryman Division One North side AFC Sudbury on Saturday.
Turner added: "They are one of the stronger sides in the northern half of the league and apparently have got an experienced front line."
