Mid-table Aveley gave Essex neighbours and Bostik League North champions AFC Hornchurch a real run for their money at Bridge Avenue on Friday night before losing 2-1 to a stoppage time goal.
In front of a good crowd of 328, the Urchins went into an 11th minute lead when a George Purcell corner was met by a powerful Connor Hogan header past Millers` keeper Rhys Madden.
The home side had the best of the rest of the half without managing to add to their tally.
But 2 minutes into the second half, they almost doubled their lead, when Purcell`s free-kick was superbly saved by Madde.
Aveley gradually got themselves back into the game and equalised in the 71st minute when a cross from Russell Malton was headed in by Garrett Kelly.
A draw looked on the cards until a minute into time added on when Theo Fairweather-Johnson set-up Purcell to shoot past Madden.
