....Chelmsford City squad into their first game in the competition this Saturday against Ryman League Division One South club Leatherhead at Melbourne.
His team have made successive ventures into the proper rounds amongst the Football League clubs during the last two campaigns and the Clarets’ boss is targeting another. He explained that the resulting prize money and potential gate receipts can assist with a club’s spending capabilities in their domestic leagues.
“Financially the FA Cup can make or break a season for a lot of teams,” he said after Thursday night’s training session. “We’re one of only a few teams to have made it to the Second Round Proper two seasons in a row and we want to have another good run this year. Leatherhead will be relishing playing a team from a higher status, just as we would if we were in their position, so we’ll have to be spot on to beat them.
“But it’s going to be another tough game. They’re doing well in their league so their confidence is high, which makes them a very dangerous proposition. We know they’re a decent side who’ve been scoring goals and they’ve had a good win in the FA Trophy. But we’re in decent form as well and we’ll be going all out for the win.”
Chelmsford still have a large number of influential players missing, including skipper Adam Tann, double Player of the Year Kenny Clark and Nicholas Bondon who are all absent from the centre of defence due to injury. Playmaker Max Cornhill won’t have recovered in time and top scorer Jamie Slabber has a groin strain. Winger Anthony Cook and central midfielder Anthony Church are both suspended.
