Couzens Relishing Number One Chance
Mick Couzens

...surroundings, has met the players and backroom staff and is relishing the prospect of a fresh challenge.

After several seasons as a reserve team boss with Bradford Park Avenue and Guiseley, plus a brief sojourn as an Evo-Stik League manager at Ossett Town, Couzens is preparing himself for a first stint in charge in the NCEL Premier Division.

He said: “I’m in the driving seat now. I was delighted to get the job and I felt the time was right to step up because in all of the years I’ve worked with under-19s and reserve sides, we have won everything in front of us.”

Couzens had four years with Avenue’s second string before his brief spell at Ossett Town. He then went to Guiseley before returning to Avenue and picking up where he left off, enjoying a successful campaign last season.

He said: “We won the Lancashire League title with Avenue’s reserves last year and did well in the cups. I’m proud of my record with Guiseley reserves and we finished as Lancashire League runners-up the season I was there.

“The Ossett job didn’t work out but I had only four defeats in thirteen competitive games while I was there and did all the training, all the tactics, scouting and game plans. If people can’t get on with me then I will walk away.

“My record stands up to scrutiny and I am ready to prove myself all over again. I’m at a stage in my life where I won’t suffer fools because I don’t have to. If there are issues I’m out of there because I can work elsewhere.

“This is something different and I have met everybody I need to before making that statement. I had a seven-hour meeting at the club just last week and had talks with the physio, the secretary, the vice-president and even some of the volunteers who help out on match days.

“It was the best thing I have ever done because I got a real feel for Brighouse Town and I have seen and heard first-hand how they will all fit in with my plans and what they will be doing in the coming season.

“I’m looking forward to it so much. It is a challenge but one that fills me with excitement.”
