The 33-year-old midfielder, who won nine caps for his country, passed a medical and put pen-to-paper on a one-year contract.
He began his career with Bristol City, making over 200 appearances, before playing for Queens Park Rangers and Wycombe.
Doherty has excelled at League Two level before, twice being named in PFA League Two teams of the year - in 2006/07 and 2008/09.
Spells at Ferencvaros, Bradford City, Newport County and Bath followed before former team-mate Paul Tisdale made the 5`8” midfield man his latest signing.
"I'm delighted to back in the Football League," Doherty said. "I'm really pleased to have been given this opportunity. I've played in the league all my life so I just hope I can continue that now.
"Paul phoned me up and said he'd like to see me and how I was, so I came down here for a bit of training and he gave me a deal - Hopefully I can impress here now."
