Wrexham enjoyed the perfect start when Danny Wright gave them a 4th minute lead, notching his second goal of the season. It was a move which spanned the width of the penalty area and involved all three forwards: Adrian Cieslewicz cut in from the right and fed Morrell, who helped it on to his left to Wright who struck the ball decisively across the keeper.
Three minutes late Gateshead keeper Paul Farman reacted slowly when Joe Clarke picked the ball up 25 yards out and hit a speculative shot that beat the visiting custodian to his right.
Things got even better for the Dragons just before the hour-mark when Mark Creighton got on the end of a Neil Ashton free-kick at the far post. His header hit the post but fell kindly for debutant Ewan Moyes as he followed the ball in and it deflected off his foot and into the net.
Gateshead, who had been unbeaten at home prior to this game, struck back quickly though, and capped a neat move when substitute Martin Brittain fed in Kris Gate to finish confidently.
Hopes of a comeback were swiftly dismissed though. Curtis Obeng`s run into the box was halted by a trip from Josh Gillies, and skipper Dean Keates stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot.
Substitute Johnny Hunt saw his effort cleared off the line as the visitors ended the match in complete control, giving caretaker-manager Andy Morrell his third win in four games since taking the helm.
