Duo on Course to Earn Port Deals
Liam Watson

.....Blue Square Bet Premier club`s manager Liam Watson will release the bulk of other triallists this week.

The Sandgrounders are two games into their pre-season schedule and though they have lost to both Preston North End and Chester FC, Watson has found reason to be positive.

Lynch and Tames have produced encouraging performances with new signing Aaron Chalmers also winning high praise from Watson and player-coach Alan Moogan.

Port used two different sides in either half in the game with Preston and an experimental XI at the Exacta Stadium in midweek against Conference North new boys Chester. Watson has used the games, particularly against Chester, to cast his eye over a batch of hopefuls and having sized most of them up, planned to cut "80%" of the triallists before tonight's training session.

Lynch and Tames are certain to avoid the cull though time could be up for several players at Haig Avenue as Watson streamlines his squad for the start of the Conference season on August 18th.

Zak Aley, who had been training with npower League Two side Accrington Stanley, made his first appearance for the Yellows on Tuesday night though it remains unclear if Watson is ready to offer him a contract.

However, Aley is expected to be part of the sixteen-man squad which will travel to Airbus UK Broughton on Saturday alongside Lynch and Tames.

"Chris Lynch has done really, really well in the two games," said Watson.

"I tried to sign him last summer but he went with Accrington Stanley and the offer of full-time football.

"We signed Andy Owens instead.

"But Accrington only kept Chris for six weeks and then he went to Stalybridge Celtic. But he's with us now and he has certainly done himself no harm towards winning a contract with us.

"Steven Tames looks a really honest player and has the raw materials to do well.

"Aaron Chalmers has been outstanding as well and Alan Moogan, who had never seen him play before, came in after the game and said "he looks a top player".

Asked for his assessment of pre-season so far, Watson said: "Fitness wise, we are getting there.

"We tried one or two lads in different positions on Tuesday night at Chester and in truth, the team only included two or three lads who will be in contention for the first game of the season. But the game enabled me to have a look at some of our triallists."
