We may still be in July but the football season officially begins in the Essex Senior Football League and Thurlow Nunn League Eastern Counties Premier and First Division tomorrow writes Tom Feaheny.
There are nine matches that take place in the Essex Senior Football League, with promotion for the top team and potential promotion for the second placed side.
Two clubs who both nearly didn’t start the season in this league meet on the first day where there has been plenty of change for Woodford Town (2017) who were handed a reprieve from the drop and have since had a name change as well.
They face FC Ilford who won an appeal just over a week ago to be readmitted to the league and their manager Allen Fenn told the club’s website he is not sure what to expect.
“It’s a bit of a unknown quantity as they have restarted this year. I know they have the manager and coach they used to have, so I imagine they’ll be a good side.”
After finishing second last season Clapton who had the best away record in the division as well they start by traveling to Basildon United.
One of the other favourites for top spot is FC Romania who start their season travelling to Wadham Lodge. Other matches include Burnham Ramblers hosting Hackney Wick who have had a name change after previously being called London Bari and Great Wakering Rovers face Stansted.
These league matches take place a week before the FA Cup gets started with sides hoping to find some form before the illustrious competition begins and pick up some points as well.
Hullbridge Sports FC are against Waltham Forest while Redbridge face Tower Hamlets. Sawbridgeworth Town take on West Essex and Takeley compete against Sporting Bengal United.
In the Eastern Counties League there are four games in the Premier Division and three in the first division.
All eight clubs in the top division that face this weekend were in this division last season.
Fakenham Town who are managed by former striker Robbie Harris take on Coggeshall Town.
Brantham Athletic are aiming for promotion this campaign and they start away with joint-bosses Michael Brothers and Matt Carmichael beginning their tenure away at Long Melford.
Meanwhile FC Clacton host Walsham le Willows and Thetford Town are away at Stanway Rovers.
In the first division March Town United start their campaign against Holland FC who last season finished fifth.
Swaffham Town have seen strikers Joe Jackson and Alex Vincent stay on with the club. They start against Needham Market Reserves. While Wisbech St Mary are against Woodbridge Town.
