Exciting Finale to Play-Off Race
Jamie McGhee

....Olympic safely assured of play-off places, it was down to Brigg Town, Grantham Town, Sutton Coldfield Town or Kidsgrove Athletic for the remaining top five spot on Easter Monday.

Ironically, `Grove hosted Newcastle, but their near-neighbours were in no mood to hand out favours, taking a 4th minute lead through Gareth Richards and then winning it 6 minutes from time through Jon Sheldon after Dave Walker had equalised in the 56th minute.

Brigg were favourites for a top five finish anyway as they started the day on seventy-seven points – one ahead of Grantham and two in front of Kidsgrove and Sutton.

Andy they duly won the derby with Goole AFC 3-0 at the Hawthorns, with second half goals from Paul Grimes, Ollie Chappell and Ryan Paczkowski.

Jamie McGhee proved to be the Gingerbreads hero, netting a last-gasp stoppage time goal at already doomed Shepshed Dynamo in front of just under 300 at the Dovecote.

Sutton met ground tenants Romulus, whose rent will probably now increase after their 2-1 win that ended the Royals hopes.

Ashley Jackson and Dean Baker had Roms 2-0 up before Stuart McNaught replied for the `away` side in front of 377 at Coles Lane.

Carlton Town could only say `if only` after a 4-0 win at relegated Spalding United left them tantalisingly close to the top five.

Curtis Shaw from the spot, Jermaine Hollis, Steve Chaplin and Terry Hawkridge were the Carlton marksmen.

Rushall start the play-off semi-final in slightly disappointing form after losing 1-0 at Dales Lane to Quorn, for whom Andy Almond was on target in the 39th minutes, and Barwell signed off with a 2-1 home win over Stamford, courtesy of Luke Barlone and Scott Hadland, with Dan Cotton`s penalty reply coming in the last minute.

Elsewhere, Sam Mullarkey netted a hat-trick for Lincoln United in their 4-2 Ashby Avenue win over Sheffield FC, as did Paul Rutter for Leek Town in a 5-3 win at Christchurch Meadow against Belper Town, for whom Paris Simmonds scored twice, and Martyn Davies bagged a brace for Market Drayton Town in a 4-0 home win over Loughborough Dynamo.

The game between Rainworth Miners Welfare and Glapwell ended 1-1, with Matt Baxter opening the Wrens` account in the 11th minute and Michael Harcourt equalising on the half-hour mark.
