FA Trophy Review (Part One)....

At the Preliminary Round stage of the FA Trophy, `upsets` are hard to come by as most of the teams involved are of the same level.

Worthy performances in this part of the round-up, however, come from Evo-Stik League Southern Division One Central sides Royston Town and Ashford Town (Middx).

Three goals in 5 second half minutes put Royston out of sight of Ryman League Division One North Aveley on Saturday.

Matt Standen and Ryan Lockett both bagged braces, with Ryan Ingrey getting the other for the Crows.

The Tangerines, meanwhile, earned a very good 5-1 win at Ryman Division One South Walton Casuals with goals from Mark Bitmead, Dan Brown, Jack Mullan, Bairoh Conteh and Ed Thomas.

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South side Kidsgrove Athletic won 4-1 at home to another Southern Central outfit in Daventry Town, courtesy of goals from Craig Dove, Ashley Hill, Liam Shotton and John Johnston, while Grove`s league rivals Rainworth Miners Welfare saw off another Southern Central side, Leighton Town, 3-0 at home with Ian Holmes` spot-kick followed by efforts from Ben Spargo and Holmes again.

Romulus saw off NPL First Division South rivals Mickleover Sports 3-0 away from home, with Dan O`Callaghan bagging a brace, and two more NPL South rivals, Loughborough Dynamo and Belper Town met in Leicestershire, with the visiting Nailers edging a seven-goal thriller with goals from Simon Harrison, Jordan Ball with two and Richard Stirrup, outscoring Jake Betts, Louis Hamilton and David Blenkinsopp`s penalty for Dynamo.

Southern Central side Chertsey Town eased through 4-1 at home to Ryman Division One North high-flyers Tilbury with Rob Carr scoring twice.

Bridgwater Town were another to score four times as they won at Southern Division One South & West rivals Abingdon United.

Kyle Thomas, Dave Pearse, Craig Veal and Jon Vance were the visiting marksmen.

Southern South Tiverton Town beat Southern Central hosts Thatcham Town, courtesy of a 71st minute Paul Kendall penalty, while John Mills` 21st minute effort sealed a similar verdict for North Leigh at Southern Central Godalming Town.

Joy for NPL First Division North over South as Gary Stopforth`s 54th minute penalty earned Ramsbottom United their passage at Brigg Town, but there was a minor surprise at Station View where First Division South strugglers Harrogate Railway won 2-1 against NPL North Bamber Bridge, whose Steve Settle gave them a 53rd minute lead that the hosts` Nathan Cartman and Pat McGuire turned over in the 66th and 72nd minute respectively.

NPL First Division North high-riders Skelmersdale United eased past league rivals Salford City 4-2, although the visitors did lead 2-1 at one stage before Paul Woolcott, Anthony Hickey from the spot and Kenny Strickland won it for Skem.

Kenny Charlton scored twice as NPL South Leek Town won 2-1 at NPL North Warrington Town, and Michael Oates` and Paul Ashton scored the goals that reversed the trend at Trafford against Sheffield FC.

And Chris Keogh`s departure from NPL First Division South Sutton Coldfield Town didn`t help as they went down to a Marc Goodfellow goal for league rivals Gresley FC at Coles Lane.
