Wisbech boss Steve Appleby has said the centre back has joined Spalding “on loan” - even though he will now be able to play for the Fenmen and Spalding because they compete in different leagues.

The 19-year-old, who signed for Wisbech from Boston United during the summer, has already played for the Tulips during a loan spell last season.

Appleby said: “I just want Simon to get some games as we’ve got a full squad at the minute.

“Centre halves rarely get used off the bench so this deal makes sense.”

Ashton played for Spalding at Deeping Rangers last night.
