First Goal Vital in Vase Tie
Garry Kimble

...League side Wisbech Town can win the game.

He has only been in charge of the Essex Senior League side for nine months but has proved an instant success with a run of eighteen games unbeaten this season which has put them second in the league. They are buzzing after a 9-0 triumph at the weekend against London APSA.

Kimble, who has had Wisbech watched before this weekend’s match, said: “I have also spoken to Stanway Rovers manager Steve Pitt and Wisbech look a decent side and have two good strikers in Chris Bacon and Liam Nimmo. If we can keep them quiet we must have a very good chance.

“We are enjoying a very good run and are confident on our day that we are a match for any team. We have goals in us too but on this occasion I think it will be a very tight game and whoever scores first and wants it most will win the tie.”

Kimble is a bit of a cup `legend` after he scored the winner for Peterborough United against Liverpool in the League Cup at London Road in 1991 and also played for Cambridge United after beginning his career at Charlton along with his brother Alan, who went on to play for Wimbledon.

The two players the Fenmen will have to watch out for are strikers Rob Witnell and John Watson who, like Bacon and Nimmo, have plundered thirty goals this season.

In the two previous rounds Witham have beaten Wisbech`s league rivals Woodbridge Town 4-1 in a replay and in the last round beat Ridgeons Division One side Team Bury.

Witham were relegated from the Ryman League at the end of the 2008/09 season and finished third in the Essex Senior League last season. `X Factor` runner-up Olly Murs, who still lives in Essex, is a former player.

The club, who have not gone beyond the Third Round in the Vase before, only attract crowds of 50-60 so there is a fair chance that the Fenland Army will once again turn this into a home tie as far as support is concerned.
