...Godsmark suffered a broken leg in their opening warm-up match against Heaton Stannington at Grounsell Park last Saturday.

The incident occurred on the hour mark when Godsmark was sent flying after a horrific-looking challenge from a home defender.

The centre back was yellow carded by the referee whilst Godsmark, who was consequently carried off, was taken to hospital for a precautionary examination which revealed a fracture to his tibia.

He had a proper cast fitted on Monday which he could wear for between six to ten weeks.

Ashington manager Gary Middleton said: “I’m bitterly disappointed for this to happen at this stage of the season.

“I’m gutted for Jonny and it is a big blow to us and the club as I reckon he will be out of the game for three months.

“However, this is the sport we are in and we just have to get on with it.”

The striker – who recently put pen-to-paper on a new contract with the Colliers – was troubled by a persistent hamstring injury last season.

And only last month he said in an interview with the News Post Leader that his goal this season was to go through the campaign injury free.

Meanwhile, Middleton said he will now scour the region for a replacement.

“Three months is too long to be without someone of Jonny’s calibre so I’ll be endeavouring to bring a new signing in.

“That, however, will not be easy at this stage of proceedings as the majority of players will have already made a decision over the summer on where they are playing, but it’s something I need to address as we are thin on the ground.”
