Green Coup for Tulips
Francis Green

....amazing signing of former Peterborough United striker Francis Green.

Tulips boss Pat Rayment has been courting the 32-year-old for much of the close season, but has finally clinched his signature.

Green, who also played for Lincoln City, Boston United and Macclesfield Town, made 107 appearances for Posh.

A jubilant Rayment described the signing as “massive” – and he now has a vast array of attacking options with Shane Tolley and Ashley Stevens also signing in recent weeks.

But the Spalding supremo admits he is still in the market for one more striker as he seeks competition for places.

Ex-King’s Lynn Town ace Robbie Harris, who is also interesting league rivals Holbeach United, is on Rayment’s radar – as is another mystery target.

Rayment said: “It’s been a big, long battle to get Franny to come here, but we’ve done it.

“There looked to be too many obstacles in our way to get it done, but I think the challenge of helping push this club forward was something that excited him. Lee Canoville and Jay Smedley also did their bit in persuading him.

“Make no mistake about it, this is massive for us. It’s a real bonus to have his experience and ability at our disposal.

“Francis is a target man and he terrorises defenders. While he may not be as prolific as some strikers, he’ll certainly make sure the likes of Shane Tolley get goals.

“He’s still hungry to play football and I’m sure he’ll be a major asset to Spalding United.

“I want to play 4-3-3 and have made no secret of the fact I’ll line up with three strikers. We’ve now got three of massive quality in Green, Tolley and Stevens. But I’d like one more, competition for places is important at any level.”

At the other end of the field, Spalding are closing on a swoop for Pinchbeck United’s highly-rated keeper Lee Drury.

Having been given a glowing reference by former Boston United keeper Paul Bastock, Rayment reckons Drury could push Nick Conroy all the way in the race to be number one at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

However, the stopper’s former gaffer Ian Dunn is also keen on taking his former player to new club Boston Town – and confirmed joint boss Matt Hocking had spoken to him about a move to Tattershall Road.

Meanwhile, versatile striker Josh Ford, who spent much of last season playing right-back, has decided to leave the Tulips.

Rayment expects the striker to join UCL Premier Division rivals Blackstones, but believes Boston Town are also keen on recruiting the former Moulton Harrox hot-shot.
