Hopley and Lea Stay - Smyth Joins Bay
Tom Smyth

.....Hopley and attacking left-back Mike Lea on one year contracts - and also signed a new centre back.

Lea, 24, won the manager and players' player of the season awards last month and was the target of strong interest from Welsh Premier side Bangor City, so to have got him on contract is great news for the club.

The 27-year-old Hopley, scored fourteen goals last season in the club's first season in the Conference North, after leading the scoring the charts with twenty-three the previous season.

This will be in his fifth campaign at the Seagulls, interrupted only by a short spell with Chester. Versatile John McKenna, who put in some sterling performances both in midfield and central defence last season has also made a verbal agreement to sign a contract when he returns from holiday. Meanwhile, Newby has also this week completed the signing of centre back Tom Smyth from demoted Northwich Victoria.

The 21-year-old is a former youth team captain at Preston North End and had spells at Accrington Stanley and Workington (on loan) before returning for a second spell at Northwich last year.

Club skipper Danny Meadowcroft and forward Allan Collins have agreed to stay at the club next season and the only definite departure so far is forward Karl Noon, who is set to join Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division side Marine.

Noon scored eight goals last season but was unable hold down a regular place in the team.
