....Darryl Knights will be sidelined for up to three months.
The 23-year-old forward is to undergo an operation to repair damage to the cartilage in his knee today.
Knights sustained the injury in pre-season training and County manager Anthony Hudson is hopeful that the player will be fit by the end of September.
The former Kidderminster Harriers player joined the club last summer and made forty-four appearances in the 2010/11 season, becoming a crucial member of the squad under former boss Dean Holdsworth, caretaker manager Tim Harris and new man Hudson.
“It’s disappointing but I’d rather it happens now than after ten or fifteen games into the season,” said the Exiles boss.
“Darryl will miss pre-season and the worst-case scenario is that he’ll be out for a couple of months. But he’s going to be here all season and we decided it was best to get the problem sorted out,” he added.
“We have cover and we are looking to bring more players in so it is not a huge problem.”
Having missed out on signing strikers Matty Taylor and Adam Birchall, Hudson is in talks with Hayes & Yeading United front man Elliott Buchanan.
The striker did not feature in Wednesday night’s friendly at Merthyr Town but could be a County player by the time Stoke City side arrive at Spytty Park on Saturday.
Hudson is also talking to three players with Football League experience – one striker and two midfielders – and is optimistic that deals can be done soon before targeting loan signings closer to the start of the season.
