Lackadaisical End for Spartans
Tommy Cassidy

....Blue Square Bet North play-off chasers Nuneaton Town.

Despite there being nothing to play for – the Spartans fate in terms of relegation having already been sealed - manager Tommy Cassidy’s normal sang-froid was transformed to anger after the game.

“OK, we were alright in the first half but in the second we were very, very poor,” said Cassidy. “We posed them no threat at all. We didn’t pass the ball and were never at the races.

“The goals we gave away were down to three farcical defensive errors. To be honest it left me quite angry but it did confirm a lot which I already knew about some players.

“I wanted us to out with a bang, to enjoy the game and play well against a top side but we couldn’t hold the ball up and had nothing in attack. I said to the players before the match that the game was an ideal opportunity to enjoy themselves and show what they can do but we didn’t deliver.

“We don’t have leaders, particularly in midfield, to dictate to the opposition both mentally and physically. On Saturday again we showed we could hold our own for part of the game but we are not consistent enough. Good players have more consistency and this is what we must aim for.

“We need an overhaul of the team with an emphasis on midfield and strikers but I won’t bring in players for the sake of it. I will be looking for experienced players who will improve us.

“Our supporters deserve better and against Nuneaton we let them down. I’ll be doing all I can in the close season and during pre-season to improve the quality of the squad.”
