Shopshire County League club Ludlow Town has gone into receivership after failing to clear debts totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The club, recently members of the Midland Alliance and West Midlands (Regional) League, has been officially wound up and all its assets including the SBS Stadium and neighbouring all-weather pitches – have been transferred to receivers Begbies Traynor.

But a new club – trading under the company name Ludlow Stadium Facilities Ltd – has been formed and will use the ground in Bromfield Road on a lease basis until it is sold. It is hoped the club will take its place in the new Mercian League when the season starts in August.

The club’s players and management met to discuss the situation last week and have confirmed they will be fielding teams for the new season.

The full extent of the club’s debts to creditors are not yet known.

Last year it was revealed the club had debts of more than £400,000 and that the club’s future hinged on a land sale deal with Shropshire Council.

But the deal failed to materialise due to contractual clauses which stated the previous landowner would be entitled to a significant slice of any sale.
