The Robins started brightly and went ahead early in the first half when Matt Palmer delivered for Danny Finnigan to score.
Danny Urry doubled the hosts' advantage with a fine volley from the edge of the penalty box shortly before half-time.
It was 3-0 not long after half-time when Vinnie Rusher eased past several defenders before firing past the visiting keeper.
Downton scored their final goal midway through the second half when Nic Turpin smartly in a one-on-one from 20 yards.
Paul Preston did come close for the visitors twice late on, but Downton held out for a comfortable and impressive win.
Verwood Town began life in the Premier Division with a 4-4 draw at Alton Town. The visitors opened the scoring after Jack Satterley scored.
The visitors added a second before Satterley made it three with his second of the game. Alton pulled it back to 3-2, all after only 15 minutes before the visitors scored again.
Alton, however, kept up with their fight back and scored twice again in the game to salvage a 4-4 draw.
Fareham Town won 2-0 away at Totton and Eling. Wayne Boud put the visitors ahead in the first half and Graham Lindsey made it 2-0 in the second half.
Christchurch produced a fine display, winning 3-1 away at Horndean. Mark Smith put the visitors ahead after 12 minutes and Russell Cook doubled the visitors' advantage midway through the first half.
Ross Lloyd made it 3-0 after 28 minutes and, although Horndean pulled a goal back on 32 minutes, the visitors held on for all three points.
