Phil McLuckie

The energetic midfielder has taken a new job at Sellafield, leaving him unable to commit to club with the shift patterns he works.

McLuckie was given a glowing reference by boss Darren Edmondson, who described him as “a major part of our team”.

Disappointed to lose the winger, who has been one of Workington’s star names in recent seasons, he added: “With the attributes he possessed and his unrelenting work-rate, Phil often set the tempo of the game.

“He also offered help to the defence and covered every blade of grass for the Workington cause during 90 minutes.

“I understand Phil’s situation, and he would have been stupid to turn down the kind of money on offer at Sellafield. He didn’t have a choice, but I am gutted to lose him.

The hunt is on to replace McLuckie with some of the triallists impressing during pre-season training.

Edmondson is pleased with the calibre of players who have teamed up with his existing squad.

Edmondson, whose side travel to Barrow on Tuesday, said: “Everyone will be given a chance to prove their worth. This might be a friendly, but we want to win the Chas Kendall Trophy, but pre-season is about making mistakes and learning as a team before the real business starts.

“My aim between now and Stalybridge Celtic on August 18th is to improve this team through the way we work and the players we have.”
