Mid-Season Slump Cost Winsford

Ian Street says a mid-season slump cost Winsford United a chance to copy last season’s finish.

The Blues finished seventh in the North West Counties League Premier Division, the manager blaming an eight-match run without a win before Chrismas for not placing higher.

“Every club has a bad spell but ours lasted too long,” he said.

“We suffered because key players picked up injuries or spent time suspended, which inevitably had an impact.

“Our performances in that time deserved better, but I can’t deny that period cost us from perhaps breaking into the top five once more.” The former Warrington Town boss said there are positives to take from his first full season in charge too, not least Blues’ goals tally.

Only champions Ramsbottom United and runners-up Runcorn Town scored more.

“We were the third highest scorers, which is great,” he said.

“But when you realise that we conceded more goals than anybody else in the top half of the table, then it’s obvious what we need to work on.

“The whole team, including me, has to take responsibility for that at the same time as taking pats on the back for our attacking record.”

Blues’ start, when they topped the table in September, as well as a run-in that saw them win nine of their final dozen games, is a glimpse of Winsford’s potential. Street sees it as a base to build upon next term.

He added: “The season was full of mixed emotion for me, both highs and lows.

“I’ve learned a lot about certain individuals over the past couple of months, in a positive and negative way, and finishing seventh can give us comfort.

“However I’m convinced we can do better.

“The attitude of some players in the last few weeks has been disappointing during a difficult period when I needed everybody to pull together.

“Some of those won’t be involved much, if at all, next season.”
