Name Change Agreed

As part of their recent overhaul, the club will change their name from the beginning of the 2012/13 season.

Stockport Sports Football Club will be born and led by former England international and Aston Villa legend, Peter Withe.

Stockport Sports will be known as the Saxons and will wear a brand new, all white kit emblazoned with a new club crest as Woodley Sports ceases to exist. The name change threatened to cause controversy at one stage, as the original proposed name – Stockport FC – was met with disharmony by those at Stockport County, as they felt the two names were too similar. However, the Woodley board were adamant that Stockport had to be part of the new club’s name, as it would help people know where the club was situated and therefore make it easier to attract new players, fans and sponsors. Stockport Sports was soon decided on though, and has been given the seal of approval by those at Edgeley Park.

County director Spencer Fearn said: “If the name was Stockport FC we’d strongly oppose it, it’d be too similar. But we don’t have a problem with “Stockport something”, we feel the names Stockport County and Stockport Sports are easily distinguishable.” Stockport Sports director Wayne Ashworth also revealed that they decided against naming their club as City or United, due to the fierce rivalry between Manchester City and Manchester United in the region.

Added to the fact that the club’s new facilities at Lambeth Grove will be known as Stockport Sports Village and managed by the Stockport Sports Trust, it was a straightforward decision for the powers that be to christen the club as Stockport Sports FC.
