Nancarrow Takes Managerial Role
Dan Nancarrow

.....St Austell striker never expected to make the move so soon in his career.

Nancarrow's appointment as the new player-manager of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Premier Division club was confirmed by chairman James Hutchings, with Kelvin Hunkin named as his assistant, and Phil Dingle joining his coaching staff.

Nancarrow doesn't turn 30 until September, meaning he will be the youngest manager in the Premier Division next season.

But that's not something that has fazed Nancarrow, who has already received the full backing of his team-mates.

He does, however, admit that his first venture into football management has taken him by surprise.

He said: "I've always wanted to be a manager but I never thought it would be yet – it's come about ten years early."

Nancarrow replaces Garry Penhaligon, who stood down at the end of the season due to work commitments.

Hutchings and St Austell`s committee have been considering a number of options since Penhaligon's departure in May. But after failing to reach a conclusion, Nancarrow was approached last month.

He explained: "At first I thought they were joking, but after thinking about it I told them I would be interested.

"I was offered the job and it was confirmed on Saturday. It's still feels strange to think that I'm going to be managing my team-mates.

"But they're a brilliant bunch, and they're all 100 per-cent behind me.

"I don't think you can put into print what Mike Body said when I told him, but in all seriousness he's buzzing for me."

Hunkin will assist Nancarrow, having worked with Division One West champions Newquay last season, while Dingle will add more experience to the backroom staff.

Nancarrow said: "It was important that I brought the right people in and Kelvin and Phil are experienced, which is great for me and the players."

Nancarrow intends to continue playing, although if he is successful in signing the "three or four" players he is targeting, the new Lillywhites' player boss could spend more time in the dug-out.

The striker has also revealed that Penhaligon could play some part for the club next season, but that will depend on work commitments.
