New Club Get Support From Miners Union

....Auckland in County Durham, who won the first World Cup in 1909.

`Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather`, which runs the Darlington Civic Theatre from Tuesday, July 24th, until Friday, 27th, will be staged to raise money for Darlington 1883, the new football club representing the town. All profits will go to Darlington 1883.

The play is about a team of miners, who played football in the Northern League, being invited to participate in the inaugural world cup in Turin, Italy. For most of them it was their first time outside the region, they had to sell their family belongings to get there and they didn’t even know if they had jobs to return to after the tournament.

The comedy drama initially played to sell-out crowds at Durham Gala theatre in 2009 to celebrate the centenary of that historic victory before transferring to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal in 2010, where it received standing ovations.

David Hopper, secretary of Durham Miners Association, said: “I saw it at Durham and it’s excellent. It’s about the men and women of a community standing together. We have produced eight advertising banners that will be displayed in Darlington and at the Durham Miners Gala on July 14th and we will be fully supporting the show.”

The Durham Miners Association will also be bringing a mining exhibition to the Dolphin Centre, Darlington, on THIS Friday and Saturday (June 29th & 30th) The event is free and will be held in Dolphin Centre foyer.

Having won the cup for the first time in 1909, West Auckland returned to Turin in 1911 to defend their title and beat the mighty Juventus 6-1 in the final.

`Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather` will run at Darlington Civic Theatre from Tuesday, July 24th, until Friday, 27th (including a Thursday matinee).

Tickets cost £20 and £15 (concessions/under 16s). All tickets for the Thursday matinee cost £10. Contact the box office on 01325 486555.
