The 27-year-old centre half suffered the injury during the second half of Tuesday’s 2-1 friendly win over a Wigan Athletic XI at Holker Street.
Nicholas left Barrow’s pre-season training camp in the Lake District on Wednesday to visit Furness General Hospital, where doctors confirmed he had a hairline fracture of the foot.
Bluebirds joint-manager Dave Bayliss said: “Nicko has a hairline fracture. It could mean either four to six weeks or six to eight weeks out.
“It’s disappointing, but he is a fit lad and maybe he could be back quicker than that.”
Nicholas is one of three players – along with skipper Phil Bolland and Mike Pearson – in the Barrow squad for next season who can play at centre half.
Pearson, however, has been earmarked to fill the right-back berth left by Simon Spender's departure.
The co-bosses are continuing to trial 28-year-old former Wrexham and York City centre half Shaun Pejic and realise they need to strengthen that department.
Another Barrow player set to visit hospital is James Owen. The central midfielder suffered a reoccurrence of a groin problem – a suspected hernia – earlier in pre-season.
“Our physio Sean Riley has got James in at Preston hospital for a scan.
“If he does need an operation, Sean will get him in within three or four days.
“After that, if he has the operation, hopefully James will be back soon after the season starts.”
