Cleethorpes Town are not even thinking of Wembley after wrapping up the Northern Counties East League title at the weekend.
Director of Football John McDermott says he is “chuffed to bits” with their championship success – and the FA Vase final will be a welcome finale.
Brody Robertson’s double and Alex Flett and Andy Taylor goals confirmed the title with a 4-0 victory over Athersley Recreation, thanks to two goals from Brody Robertson, Alex Flett and Andy Taylor.
They now have the Lincolnshire FA Senior Trophy final at Sincil Bank on Wednesday vs Deeping Rangers before, of course, the little matter of Wembley.
McDermott told the Grimsby Telegraph: “To win a league with three games to go and score over 100 goals is nothing short of incredible.
“The way they have passed the ball about on some difficult pitches in this league has been a joy to watch – proper football.
“Credit to Marcus (Newell, manager) and his management team – this doesn’t happen overnight – this has taken a lot of hard work from everybody.
“We want to finish off the season in style and we look forward to the cup final on Wednesday as the players all want more success.
“It will be a tough game but these players just love playing football matches and the chance to win silverware.
“Wembley? Well, we will look after that when the league is finally over!”
