Penistone Church manager Ian Richards says winning the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Cup completed his best season with the club.
Church who were also promoted to the Premier Division, defeated Bridlington Town 4-1. The match that took place at Bramall Lane was an occasion Richards certainly enjoyed.
“It’s a great achievement for everyone involved. We have won this trophy against one of the best teams in the NCEL, that makes it extra special. I’m really proud of us, 44 teams entered the competition, we are the ones who have won it.
“It caps off a fine campaign for us, we need to make sure we really enjoy the highs that we are experiencing. There is a squad of 19 of us and we will have an end of season night out with all 19.”
After defeating a side who are in the Premier and one of the favourites to go up next season. Richards says it proves on their day they will give teams in the Premier a test.
“We’ve got to be realistic over 42 games we can’t compete with teams like Bridlington. We will be realistic but I’ve already set an aim for us to be a top ten side. I think Handsworth, Bridlington and Pickering will challange for the title maybe in three years we will be as well.”
