South Shields won the Ebac Northern League First Division title, thanks to a devastating three-goal burst in the first 20 minutes on their way to a 4-1 win at Ashington on Tuesday night.

They took the lead after 11 minutes when David Foley fired into the bottom corner, then Foley added a second from a Robbie Briggs pass 4 minutes later.

It was 3-0 when Michael Richardson fired the third from the edge of the box.

After that, Shields were able to stay well in control and were able to cruise through the rest of the game, although Ryan McGorrigan pulled a goal back for Ashington.

There was still time for Gavin Cogdon to score a fourth right at the end.

West Auckland Town are still in danger of finishing in the bottom three after they were beaten 2-0 at home by Jarrow Roofing.

West missed a great opportunity to take the lead when they awarded a penalty for a foul, but Craig Ruddy’s penalty was saved by Jarrow `keeper Andy Hunter.

Roofing’s Chris Winn missed a good chance from a few yards, while Ibby Hassan’s header was well saved by Hunter.

Roofing took the lead on 41 minutes when Paul Chow crossed from the right for Michael Mackay to head home.

West tried to get back into the game in the second half and had plenty of pressure, but they were caught 10 minutes from the end when Mackay beat West `keeper Gareth Shaw from the edge of the box.
