South Shields Jon Shaw believes their positive start to pre-season is crucial as they look to hit the ground running in the Evo-Stik League North writes Tom Feaheny.

They drew against Vanarama National League side Gateshead at the weekend. Shaw told the club’s website he was pleased with how himself and his team mates played during the match.

“I think everyone can see the work we have done, we have carried it on and stepped it up. Overall we can’t complain about the outcome.”

“We are only here two days a week but we work so well and you could see that during the game against Gateshead.”

It was a memorable season for the side during the previous campaign with promotion and the FA Vase being secured, Shaw says that feel-good factor has helped the team, as they prepare for the 2017/18 term.

“Even though it wasn’t that long since we played at Wembley, it felt like it was ages ago. We just wanted to get out again.

“It is now about getting the games in, getting that sharpness up. We need to test ourselves, get the minutes in and get used to playing with each other.”
