Gresley earned promotion to Step 5 of the non-League Pyramid by winning the East Midlands Counties League earlier this month.

Come August, they will ply their trade in either the Baker Joiner Midland Alliance or the KoolSport Northern Counties East League, but no announcement has been made yet.

That means boss Norton cannot begin building his squad for next season as potential signings will want to know what division they are signing up for, while the club do not yet have the required registration forms.

Norton said: “I’m a bit frustrated.

“We realise that we need to strengthen in one or two areas, and we’ve spoken to some players.

“But some of those are linked to what league we are in as they’ve said they would only sign if we are in the Midland Alliance.”

The Moatmen enjoyed a few days away at the races last week and Norton spoke to much of the squad then, as well as catching up with most of the remaining players in the following days, and he is happy to give them all the chance to prove themselves for next season.

He said: “We don’t get registration documents until we know what league we’re in, but most, if not all, of the players are happy to come back next season.

“The players will have other clubs ringing them up and one or two are keeping their options open, but most have agreed verbally.

“I’d like to give everyone the opportunity.

They have all shown they are capable of stepping up “If one or two players come in who are better than what we’ve got, then people may find chances limited, but we’ll build the squad up from pre-season.”
