Hughes' men will now play in the Evo Stik League Southern Division One South & West after being relegated for finishing bottom of the Southern Premier.

"We had a reasonable pre-season regarding morale and confidence boosting, but the standard isn't always on par with the teams we'll be playing in the league so it's hard to judge," he said.

"But what we have now is the confidence and belief that when we play at our best we can play decent football, and I think that's what we didn't have last time. If you have a bad pre-season all sorts of doubts start to creep in."

Their season kicks off today away at Mangotsfield United and Hughes has a full squad who are ready and raring to go.

He continued: "We had a couple of injuries during pre-season in Chris Thompson and Ben Wells but they came through training on Tuesday. We're in good spirits and ready to go now.

"There's a point in pre-season where the lads just want to get on with the season and I think, as I saw on Tuesday, they are ready for that now, ready for battle to commence.

"I've got a good group of lads who are desperately keen on getting on with the business of playing football and picking up the points."

Hughes is looking forward to the challenge away at the Mangoes today but predicts an evenly contested match.

"I'm not sure as to what Mangotsfield have got but I do always remember it being a difficult place to go and we'll need to be at our best," he added.

"Most teams have a bit of a nervy affair first up, trying not to make a mistake. We just need to get off to a flyer – that would really help."
