Roberts has spent much of the season as second-choice goalkeeper at Peterborough League Premier Division title-favourites Pinchbeck, but he is back in the limelight now after answering an SOS from Fenmen chief Steve Appleby.
Roberts initially agreed to deputise for one match with regular keeper Ricky Lovelace unavailable for tomorrow’s trip to Stanway Rovers.
But Lovelace suffered a season-ending shoulder injury during a midweek loss at the hands of Diss Town and opportunity now knocks for Roberts, a man who actually impressed against Wisbech earlier in the campaign when playing for March Town United in two FA Cup clashes between Fenland’s finest.
Appleby said: “Tom had agreed to come in for tomorrow before Ricky got injured and now he’ll be with us for the rest of the season.
“I’ve known him for several years since my time as assistant-manager to Dick Creasey at Spalding United when he was a young lad just coming through.
“He showed his quality against us in the FA Cup games and I have no qualms about giving him the opportunity. He is a very good goalkeeper who has never quite had the break he deserves.”
Wisbech’s promotion hopes have faded fast after picking up just one point from their last two matches, but Appleby won’t let their season fizzle out.
He added: “We’ve let ourselves down in the past few days and any lads that think they can give up now won’t be around next season.
“I’ve said all along that I want to better the fourth place we finished in last season and that’s not changed.”
