Roms Raise Over £1000 for Charity

.....charity, the John Taylor Hospice in Erdington, last weekend with the help of local businesses Alcoa, Kitts Green and Rio Surfacing, Nechells.

The annual Sutton Charity Cup, a friendly between Sutton Coldfield Town and Romulus, raises funds for local charities and helps both teams prepare for the rigours of the Northern Premier League campaign.

Romulus’ charity, the John Taylor Hospice, and Sutton Coldfield Town’s designated cause the Pink Ribbon Foundation were this season’s beneficiaries. Both teams donated the gate receipts and a bucket collection.

John Taylor Hospice’s coffers received a further boost thanks to a £1,000 cheque from aluminium company Alcoa, and a further £100 donation from Rio Surfacing.

Receiving the cheques on behalf of John Taylor Hospice, Communications Officer Amanda Young said: “We are grateful to both teams for supporting us and investing in our work providing end of life care in the hospice and in people’s homes.

“We were delighted to be a part of this community event and the crowd has been very generous in responding to our collection. We hope to continue to build links with the teams and other sports organisations into the future.”

Romulus chairman Andy Wilson said: “It has been a great day for all involved and everyone associated with the hospice seems to have enjoyed their day.

“Romulus have supported the John Taylor Hospice over the past few years and will continue to do so – they do fantastic work in our community and the help they give to many people in their hour of need should never be underestimated.”

Alcoa’s Community Officer Bev Hawkesford added that the cheque presentation was part of an ongoing link between the company and John Taylor Hospice.

“Alcoa's Kitts Green community fund comes about by employees putting forward suggestions and safety improvement proposals. To each approved proposal Alcoa puts £3 into a fund. An employee committee sits to decide who and where the money should be spent on, in line with the overall investment strategy of the company.

“This system has been running for around ten years, and around £100,000 has been donated to various good causes connected with Alcoa employees.”
