Sands Determined to Make It Work
John Sands

....Square Bet Premier neighbours Cambridge United.

Sands, 24, scored thirty-five goals for `Hall last season and as a result was offered a two-week trial by U`s manager Jez George.

“I am pretty confident,” said Sands. “I have been doing a lot of running, cycling and boxing at the gym to keep myself fit ahead of pre-season training. It’s been hard work but I need to do it.

“I have to make the most of the opportunity on offer.”

The striker previously had an unsuccessful spell with United’s neighbours Cambridge City in 2009, and returned to Mildenhall just a season later. However, Sands explained the reasons behind his torrid time at City and set out his ambitions this time round.

He added: “It didn’t work out with Cambridge City because I feel I wasn’t given the chance to score goals, but I am going fully fit to the trial to prove myself.

“I feel after the season I just had I deserve the opportunity to prove myself at that level and obviously Cambridge United have seen something in me to give me that chance.

“I’m confident with the right service I can score a lot of goals and if I get that chance in the team with a consistent run of games then I would aim for 20-odd goals, but I have to get in the team first.

Mildenhall manager Christian Appleford has giving his full backing to Sands to try and earn the move to United and stated he would welcome him back if it doesn’t work out, a point which has not been lost on the striker.

He said: “Mildenhall and the manager have been brilliant with the situation. There have been some good talks between the clubs and everything has been handled well.

“Unless another club comes in for me at a higher level, I won’t be looking to go somehwere else in this division. I’d be happy to come back to Mildenhall. They’re my local club and have always been brilliant to me.

“I would be fully focused to come back and do my best for the team, maybe I would aiming to score forty-five goals.

Meanwhile, Appleford has admitted plans are already in place to bring in new players, regardless of the Sands’ situation and revealed those moves could be sealed by the weekend.

He added: “We have already spoken to a few people, and it is now just a case of getting those people to sign.

“We want players who can play in a variety of positions.”
