The announcement comes after ground owner John Rundle agreed to allow the Mariners another season in which to find the asking price to buy the stadium.
Gateshead Thunder Rugby League club had at one time also been thought to be interested.
Shields secretary Philip Reay said that they were greatly relieved: “Clubs we approached about groundsharing have been very supportive but there are only two weeks to the start of the season and nothing had been agreed. It was very worrying. Until John’s move we thought we might have tom fold. We’re very grateful to him.”
